The Unrefined Dimension

The Josh Goot woman has grown up, casting aside the designer’s well-known body-con designs and replacing them with longer hemlines and more elegant silhouettes with a mature colour palette.
“I was thinking about what options women working in the city actually have to wear [to] look cool and they were minimal,” Josh says. “I think our aesthetic can lend itself well to doing that seamlessly, in a way that doesn’t sacrifice our belief systems but still gives them some great options.”
Working with this brief, Redken 5th Ave NYC Artist Sophie Roberts created a multi-textured ponytail, both natural and refined, for Josh Goot’s Autumn Winter 2012 Look Book.
Sophie created a look of 1990’s minimalism with an aim to create a style which was effortless and dimensional. The result, a ponytail that transcends from a fashion landscape to the home.

The 31-year-old American reality television star showed off her brand new image, complete with a new hairdo (bangs or fringes), in a sexy white short dress embellished with a jewel around the neckline.
"You've got to believe in love. I still do," she said to USA Today, sporting a fresh new attitude to life in the New Year.
The past year was something of a mixed bag for Kardashian... she married boyfriend Kris Humphries in August and divorced him 72 days later, due to "irreconcilable reasons".
"I am ready to move forward and not look back. I learned a lot of about myself this past year and at the end of the day you always have to trust your gut," she said, reflecting on 2011.
Kardashian tweeted her thoughts on the new look, posting a photograph and asking for fans' opinion: "I wanna a new hairstyle for tonight! Should i do bangs?"
She was seen celebrating New Year's Eve with her family, at the TAO Nightclub at The Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino, the Daily Mail reported.

Favorite Color Formulas from Top Redken Artists

With the recent launch of Redken Shades EQ Cream and Cover Plus, top artists like Tracey Cunningham, and David Stanko headed to their dispensaries and played with new formula ideas and options. Here’s a quick-reference guide to their easiest, most-effective formulas so you can be armed with the tools to create amazing color for any client, any time of year.

1. COLOR MASTERY
The Artist:
Tracey Cunningham | Byron and Tracey Salon, Beverly Hills, CA

Special Technique/Formula: For lowlights, use a richer shade in Zone 1 (the area 1-1½ inches from the scalp) and a slightly lighter shade in Zone 2 (mid-shaft towards ends). In Zone 1, apply 2 oz. 05WN Sandy Sable Shades EQ Cream + 2 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer. In Zone 2, apply 2 oz. 07WN Chai Tea Shades EQ Cream + 2 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer.

Color Hot Tip: Try “smudging” the base color after a highlight service. After you shampoo off your foils, apply Shades EQ Cover Plus Clear with 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer for 7-10 minutes. Because there is no deposit, your timing is based on your desired result.
2. COLOR MASTERY

The Artist:
David Stanko | Angelo David Salon, New York, NY
Special Technique/Formula: To create a vibrant ginger-red with no hot roots, apply 1 oz. 07GC Burnished Copper Shades EQ Cream + 1 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer to Zone 1. To Zone 2, apply 1 oz. 09GC Golden Sienna Shades EQ Cream + 1 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer.
Color Hot Tip: For browned-out ends, try using 2 oz. Shades EQ Cover Plus Clear + 2 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer. The subtle brightening effects of Shades EQ Cover Plus will help return brightness to browned-out ends.

3. BRILLIANT BRUNETTES

The Artist:
Julie Hoffman | Salon Lofts, Hillard, OH
Special Technique/Formula: For a more dimensional brunette look, try sectioning the head into 4 quadrants for a global application. Start in the right nape and apply a base formula of 1 oz. 03BR Burgundy Wine Shades EQ Cream + 1 oz. 05WN Sandy Sable Shades EQ Cream + 2 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer to Zone 1. Immediately apply an accent formula of 1 oz. 06NA Cool Cocoa Shades EQ Cream + 1 oz. 03BR Burgundy Wine Shades EQ Cream + 2 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer to Zone 2.  Drop down another ¼-inch section and apply the same Zone 1 formula, followed by Shades EQ Cream Clear in Zone 2. Keep alternating the accent formula for Zone 2 with Shades EQ Cream Clear.

5 Short Hair Style Inspirations from Top Hairdressers

By: Angie Manson

Who says short hair has to be one-note? Not these five hairdressers, who have found new ways to glam up short hair and turn it into something truly spectacular this season. It’s the time of year when clients are willing to try something new with their look, and right now, short hair is all about motion, volume and chic, retro styling. Here are their chic style inspirations.

Beth Minardi, Beth Minardi at Mark Garrison Salon, New York City“I love super-short hair with motion. The style should move in various directions and never have to do the same thing twice! Volume is another key word for short hair this year. My Minardi Gel Cocktail works so well for styling short hair. For color, I believe in a strong statement. Dark brunettes, bright reds or pale blondes look so beautiful and chic. Push your creativity this season and don’t settle for anything too soft or subtle!”

Tracey Hughes, Meika Hairdressing,
Redken Artistic Director,
 Australia
“The latest hair trends are drawn from timeless classics with a rebellious abandonment to create lasting appeal and modern urban chic. Short hair prevails this coming season, highlighted by playful boyish looks with length through the top and fringe area to maintain softness. Beautiful short bobs are striking and can be worn smooth and slick or sassy and sexy with subtle layers to create movement. Designs are all about versatility and fluidity to enable you to produce more than one look.”

Sarah Conner, Neil George Salon, Beverly Hills“Right now, I love turning any basic bob or pixie cut into something glamorous by taking it back retro with strong yet soft and romantic waves—like finger waves or big barrel curls. Plus, simply switching a part up and styled off the face adds instant glam appeal. Think Ginnifer Goodwin. She normally wears her hair down and parted to one side in the front but has made her look more glamorous by wearing it up and away from her face.”

Martino Cartier, Keratin Complex Artist, Martino Cartier Salon, New Jersey“Short, fun pixie cuts are my favorite right now. They’re sexy, sassy and really show off a woman's face, plus they offer flexibility in styling. I think short hair needs to be sassy and full of energy this season. A pixie transitions so well from day to night with just a shot of hairspray, like Keratin Complex Flex Flow Hairspray. Just run your fingers through the hair and add more texture for a super-stylish, holiday look.”

Charlie Price, Multiple NAHA Winning Stylist, Colorado“I adore Gwen Stefani's retro style on the cover of the recent InStyle magazine. The signature platinum color style into a retro wave epitomizes what makes short hair so sexy this season. It looks healthy and not overly sculpted, and it's just timeless, ageless and sublime!”

Take Control of the Curl

Now more than ever, women with textured hair love flaunting their natural curls. To make sure your curly-haired clients look perfectly put together, you need to take control of the curl. With a blunt shear, his signature weave technique and proper management of how much weight is removed, Sam Villa says you’ll master the art of cutting curly hair in no time. Here’s what you do: Start by applying Redken Fresh Curls Curl Refiner to thick, coarse hair to tame. Pick up the desired section close to the scalp, the crown or mid-shaft; it’s your call—this technique can be done anywhere on the head. Weave the Sam Villa Signature Series 7” Dry Cutting Shear through the section, just like you would if doing a highlight. You are controlling the amount of hair picked up, and therefore determining the amount of weight to cut out. Close the shear. Because you are closing a blunt blade, ends will be nice and clean and the integrity of the hair will be left intact. Once hair is dry, apply Redken Fresh Curls Curl Boost to re-energize the curl with control and shine.

Redken Launches Shades EQ Cream & Cover Plus

Ready for some exciting news in the world of haircolor? Redken will be adding to their already stellar lineup of amazing haircolor products with the expansion of the Shades EQ line—it’s now available in two new cream formulas—Shades EQ Cream and Cover Plus! Both lines offer rich, deep color and incredible shine, plus the formulas are rich in pomegranate oil and rice protein for superior conditioning and long-lasting color.
We know what you may be thinking—is the original Shades EQ Gloss being discontinued or changing? The answer is emphatically “no!” The new additions allow you to double your haircoloring options to meet all of your demi-permanent needs. Learn a little bit more about Shades EQ Cream and Cover Plus, including how you can incorporate them into your salon to live in perfect harmony with the original Shades EQ Gloss.
Shades EQ Cream• Same no-lift, no-ammonia acid pH technology found in Shades EQ Gloss
• 100% oxidative dyes for richer, deeper, long-lasting color
• Creamy consistency is perfect for lowlighting, color blocking and other placement techniques
• Advanced gray blending
• Excellent durability—fades on tone
• Available in 20 shades, plus Clear

Patrick Fitzwater of Salon Oasis in Boca Raton, FL says Shades EQ Cream is perfect for Balayage techniques placed in-between foils. “The cream consistency offers a creative advantage by keeping the color where you place it,” he says. After the foils and Balayage have processed, he likes to glaze over the top with a Shades EQ Gloss formula for a beautiful, multi-dimensional effect.
Shades EQ Cover Plus• No ammonia formula that provides up to 75% gray coverage with demi-permanent results
• Maximum gray blending

PRO TIP: Introduce Shades EQ Cream and Cover Plus into your salon in a fun way!
Patrick Guarniere of Bang Salon in Washington, DC says to run a contest with Shades EQ Cream and Cover Plus in your salon. “Take a ‘before’ picture of your client and then mix two or more shades based on your desired color outcome,” he says. “Then have your client name the formula. Take an ‘after’ picture of your client with their new Shades EQ or Cover Plus shade. Enter each client who participates into a drawing at the salon for a special prize.”
